Education changes the world.
Currently, we are conducting large-scale mission trips to Colombia that focus on educational activities for the children and youth within the communities we serve. Cartagena Paws' educational program provides educational events to neighborhoods in and around Cartagena and La Guajira, Colombia. During an event, our volunteers present the One Health model to participants, helping them to think about the connection between humans, animals, and their environment, as well as, the importance of caring for all parts of our environment. Part of our work is to change the culture of abuse and neglect by fostering empathy, especially in our younger participants. Cartagena Paws ask participants to think critically about the ways in which they can help their community through various age appropriate activities. In this way, we are not just educating, but encouraging the community to take action in ways that are possible for them. The lessons and activities have been designed by stateside teachers, environmentalists, and educators who are frequent volunteers on our sustainable educational missions to Colombia.
During the last year, we have been expanding our educational program and have seen a drastic impact on the communities with high rates of poverty and little access to education. Our educational program provides students with highly effective and strategic activities that bestows them with the knowledge and power required to create a sustainable impact on the communities; while also supplying them with much needed access to food, resources and fresh-water during the events. Over the past year, we have worked with over ten communities, helped over 790 children participants, 396 adult participants, provided 2,270 meals for children participants, and over 5,000 humanitarian items for the children of the community.
