Education changes the world.
Cartagena Paws' educational program provides educational events to neighborhoods in and around Cartagena that have a large stray animal population and history of animal abuse. Educational events include all age ranges of participants, from adults to young children.
During an event, our volunteers present the One Health model to participants, helping them to think about the connection between humans, animals, and the environment, as well as, the importance of caring for all parts of our environment. They also discuss animals needs, emotions, and how to care for animals, both pets and strays. Part of our work is to change the culture of abuse and neglect by fostering empathy, especially in our younger participants. Finally, volunteers look to the participants to think critically about the ways in which they can help their community through various age appropriate activities. In this way, we are not just educating, but encouraging the community to take action in ways that are possible for them.
Our hope is that through education we can change the mindset of how animals are viewed in Cartagena, and in turn those participants will become active agents for change in their community.
Currently, we are fundraising to build an Educational Rescue Center in Cartagena. Part of the mission of the Educational Rescue Center will be to provide on site educational services with and without animal. We plan to teach participants of all ages the basics of animal care and training.
