In December 2019, Cartagena Paws did our second educational event in San Basilio de Palenque, a small tourist destination outside of Cartagena. During our first event, we brought a food and water dispenser for stray animals called a ComeDog. This dispenser is maintained by the community with help from tourists and Peace Corps volunteers. For this visit, we wanted to see if we could make it an even more integral part of the community with its children.
The event started with kids learning about the 5 ways to take care of your pet. Next, they got a lesson on how to train your dog from one of our volunteers Heather and her dog Chucho. Heather taught them different commands and how to be consistent with training. Finally, the kids made posters to promote the ComeDog animal feeder around town to locals and tourists.
The best part was seeing the kids interact with a trained dog and learning how to give commands.
