Lucita - A Success Story

3/24/2018

Lucita was found abandoned on the side of a busy highway with 8 small puppies. She was rescued and taken to the FRAD foundation and later put into foster and adopted. Lucita was adopted by a wonderful woman who dedicated months to getting her healthy, treating her for heartworm and other health issues. Lucita was having trouble getting along with the other dogs in her house, and had to be surrendered. We decided it was best if Lucita was placed in a home without other animals, and the soul, focus of attention, as she is quite a lover.

In spite of her previous hardships, Kevin knew Lucita, called Lucy, was the dog for him because of how friendly she was as soon as she met the family. After the quick and easy adoption with Cartagena Paws, she made herself at home in their house right away. When she is not going on walks or playing in the backyard, her beloved toy, a large stuffed hedgehog, is taking a beating.

Lucy also loves belly rubs and her favorite treats, biscuits and rawhides. As night rolls around, you can find Lucy cuddled up in bed for awhile, but later on the couch so she can stretch out. All and all, Kevin and his family know that Lucy is happy because she is always wagging so much her whole body sways.

Meet Laila.

Laila is a beautiful and gentle 4-year-old Yellow Lab and Cartagena Paws is determined to find her a forever home.

But before we can do that, we need your help; Laila needs a sponsor.

Laila was abandoned outside the doors of FRAD two months ago.  Since being abandoned, she has contracted a severe case of mange, a treatable condition.  What was once a content, happy dog has turned into a dog constantly in discomfort, itching and in pain all over the largest organ of her body: her skin.  In order to rehabilitate Laila, we need someone to commit to sponsoring her back to health.  Laila needs to be removed from FRAD and put into vet and then foster care.  She needs treatment for mange, new vaccinations, to be spayed, to be boarded, and food throughout her rehabilitation process.  If you, or someone you know, are willing to cover this cost and sponsor Laila throughout this process, please contact us.

As soon as we have a sponsor, we can pull Laila from FRAD and begin the important task of rehabilitation.

Thank you for your support in healing this beautiful dog.

Go Fetch!

3/1/2018

Dogs seem to have an unlimited amount of energy. Well, except for my parent’s dog Kylie. She will only move for food. Literally. Anyway, most dogs have this endless supply of jumps, wiggles, and fetches. Sadly humans do not. After a long day at work and the many other demands of being a human, we are tired. However, most times our pets have had the opposite day, filled with laying around, relaxing, and waiting for us.

This month’s tip is a way to tweak your normal fetch routine so your fur baby gets their energy out quicker so you can both go relax together.

Play fetch on a hill.

It’s that simple. There are two reasons why this works. First, since you will be uphill, your dog will have to run downhill and then up again. The uphill trot will cause them to exert more energy than flat land due to the slope. Meaning a more quickly tired pup. The second reason is that if you aren’t the best thrower, the slope will use gravity to your advantage and tumble the object further. So you don’t have to throw like a baseball player for your pup to get longer fetches.

Longer fetches + uphill climb = happy tired dog and happy doggy parent.

Thanks for reading our pup tip of the month!
